History:

NY 3's original alignment began at the present day junction of US 62 and NY 425 in North Tonawanda, Niagara County. With some exceptions, NY 3 followed its 1924-30 alignment east toward Rochester along either present day NY 31 or NY 104. Between Rochester and Sterling, NY 3 roughly followed present day NY 104 and NY 104A before meeting the current western terminus. NY 3 was truncated nearly 150 miles east to Sterling in 1935 as a result of US 104 being assigned.
