History:

* NY 13 previously extended south through Horseheads and into Elmira via Old Ithaca Rd., S. Main St., and Lake Rd., then along Water St. (Current NY 352) and present day NY 225 to Caton before ending at US 15 (now Steuben CR 115) in Lindley. NY 13 would be truncated to Water St. in the 1940s and to its current southern terminus in 1961.

* When construction of the I-86 (NY 17) viaduct in Horseheads was completed in 2007, NY 13 was extended along the newly created service roads southbound to Center St. and northbound from NY 14.

* Through Ithaca, NY 13 was originally aligned along its present course to Green St. where NY 13 joined NY 79's alignment. The duplex split just east of downtown with NY 13 following present day NY 366 through the Cornell Plantations and into Lansing before rejoining its present course. NY 13 was relocated in the early 1970s with the completion of a four-lane expressway and super-2 linking Ithaca and Lansing. In 1996, NY 13 with several other routes in Ithaca, were re-aligned in order to eliminate The Octopus, a multi-legged intersection known for many serious accidents. NY 13, which had run in both directions along Meadow St., was split into two one-way couplets through downtown. Northbound traffic continues to use Meadow St., while southbound traffic uses Fulton St., located one block west of Meadow.
