* Originally extended south into downtown Binghamton by running concurrent with US 11.
* Bypasses built around Greene, N. Norwich, and Barneveld.
* Expressway sections in the Utica area were built in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Prior to that, NY 12 followed Genesee St. through downtown Utica. Then north along Trenton Rd. (Oneida CR 91) before returning to its present course just south of Mapledale.

Informational signage for the downhill grade on NY 12 north in New Hartford. There is a runaway vehicle ramp about one mile from the bottom of the hill and a traffic signal at the bottom of said hill.
