History:	Construction began in 1954, with the last sections opening in 1971. Sometime in the next few years, a segment of I-81 between Exits 16A and 29 will be relocated to the current I-481 alignment as the elevated section of I-81 in downtown Syracuse is expected to be demolished and replaced with a grade level boulevard. Construction began in 2023 with reconstruction of the two interchanges with I-481 north and south of Syracuse. The project as a whole is expected to be completed by 2028. The process to convert I-81's exit numbering scheme from sequential to mileage based began in 2023 with the exits in NYSDOT Region 3 (Cortland, Onondaga, and Oswego Counties) along sections that will not be relocated. Exit numbers north of Syracuse reflect the new mileage once the Syracuse section of I-81 is relocated to I-481.
