History: |
* Assigned in 1926 starting along what is now NY 5 between Ripley and Silver Creek, then along its current alignment from Silver Creek to Orchard Park. US 20 then followed what is now US 20A out of Orchard Park and east to Geneseo. After following present day NY 39 to Avon, US 20 picked up its current alignment (During most of the 1930s, the alignment from Geneseo to East Avon shifted to present day US 20A east to Lakeville and present day NY 15 north to East Avon). Aside from smaller alignment shifts in Canandaigua, Geneva, Auburn, and Cherry Valley, US 20 followed its current alignment east to the Massachusetts border. The Ripley to Silver Creek alignment shifted to its present location in 1932. The Orchard Park to Avon alignment shifted to its present location in 1938 supplanting most of the original NY 35 designation.
* At the north end of Canandaigua Lake, US 20/NY 5 was moved from Lake Shore Dr. onto a new four lane road in the late 1960's. * US 20/NY 5 in Canandaigua was relocated from West Ave. and S. Main St. to a newly built bypass in 1981. * US 20 is the longest US route in the country and the 3rd longest signed route in New York State. |
