History:

* Assigned in 1926 as US 9E from Jersey City, NJ to Albany, and US 9W from Albany to Glens Falls. The US 9E designation was removed in 1930. US 9E became US 9 south of Albany, and an extension of US 4 north of Albany. Also, the US 9W designation was trunacted from Glens Falls to Albany, and that section of US 9W became US 9.
* From its inception until 1934, US 9 entered New York via ferry crossings. Until 1931, US 9 came into Manhattan from Edgwater, NJ. From 1931 until 1934, US 9 entered Staten Island from Perth Amboy, then followed Hylan Blvd. before meeting the Staten Island Ferry and taking that across the Hudson into Manhattan. In 1934, US 9's entry point was moved to its present location at the George Washington Bridge.
* US 9 moved to the Croton Expressway in 1967 and its original routing became NY 9A. The Croton Expressway was to have been a part of the much larger Hudson River Expressway (I-487 and NY 399) before the project was killed off in 1971.
* At the north end, US 9 may have extended to the Canadian border and continued north as PQ 9. However, it appears US 9 was truncated to its current northern terminus as the result of the construction of I-87 and Autoroute 15.
