NY 268 was originally assigned in Erie County in 1934. NY 268 began at NY 5 in Clarence and followed Salt Rd. north to Tonawanda Creek Rd. Then it turned west along Tonawanda Creek Rd. before ending at NY 78 in Millersport, just north of the NY 263 intersection. The Erie County alignment was decommissioned in 1974.

The current NY 268 alignment was assigned in the early 1990s.
