NY 225 was originally assigned to present day Tioga CR 7 between Tioga Center and Spencer through the 1940s. In 1949, NY 225 replaced the former southern extension of NY 414 from Caton to Corning. In the mid 1980s, NY 225 was extended east along it current alignment to NY 352 just west of Elmira.
