In the Westchester/Long Island inset of the 1935 Sunoco Rand McNally New York state map, a NY 405 is shown leaving Ossining to the north before the map cuts off. This may have been intended to be the original designation which was never built as there are no actual roads that correlate with what the map shows.

NY 405 in Rensselaer County was assigned in 1973 when NY 40 was truncated to its current location.
