NY 287's original alignment was located in Oneida and Herkimer Counties and followed NY 365's current alignment east of Rome. In an effort to reduce the number of overlapping routes in the area, the NY 287 designation was removed on 1/1/1970 (Reference markers along NY 365 east of NY 12/NY 28 in Barneveld still reflect the NY 287 designation). However it would later resurface in 1977 when NY 287 was used to replace the NY 26B designation in Jefferson County. This second incarnation was short lived as the state decommissioned the route for good two years later.
Replaced By: Jefferson CR 192
Recommendation:

Assigning NY 287 to Steuben CR 115 and CR 73 in Lindley in Presho (The original US 15 alignment in the area). While New York Routes discourages duplication of numbers (I-287 in Rockland and Westchester Counties), the NY 287 designation would be appropriate since it would serve as a match for PA 287 (A similar violation does exist with NY 295 in Columbia County). There is enough distance between the two routes where confusion between I-287 and NY 287 would be very minimal. The northern terminus would be at NY 417 in Erwin.
