Additional History: The existing segments of NY 42 are part of the original routing. The route was split up in 1934 when it was determined that the section between Grahamsville and Shandaken, now covered by Sullivan CR 19, 157, and Ulster CR 47, was below state standards. Because of the terrain and low traffic volumes, upgrading the section was not feasible.
