Length: 12.59 miles (20.27 km)
Orientation: North-South
Counties: Steuben
Cities: None
Villages: Painted Post
Towns: Lindley, Erwin
Name(s): None
History:

US 15 was part of the original 1926 US Highway System. However it did not extend into New York until 1939 when it was assigned to the former US 111 in Steuben County. The original alignment followed Indian Hills Rd. (Steuben CR 73/CR 115) to present day NY 417, which carried NY 17 at the time. The duplex continued through Gang Mills before splitting in Painted Post. From there, US 15 followed today's NY 415 to Wayland and NY 15 to Rochester. In 1974, US 15 was truncated to its present northern terminus in Painted Post. At the same time, a four-lane expressway was built from Presho to Painted Post, and US 15 was moved to its present alignment. In October 2008, a four lane section of expressway was completed between PA 287 in Tioga, PA and just north of the state line in Lindley. The final expressway section, from Lindley to Presho was opened to southbound traffic in August 2013 and fully open.
* NYSDOT designation for US 15 is "15U" to distinguish it from NY 15.
* Two US 15 shields in downtown Rochester date back to when the US 15 designation was still in place in the area.
* Exits on the expressway alignment from the PA border to Painted Post were not numbered until 2005. In 2013, the exit numbering scheme was changed from sequential to mileage based.
* The expressway was given the I-99 designation in New York on June 27, 2014. It is speculated that, once PA awards the I-99 designation for their section of US 15 north of Williamsport, US 15's northern terminus will be moved to its interchange with I-180/US 220 in downtown Williamsport.

Recommendation:

Truncate US 15's northern terminus to Williamsport, PA upon the designation of I-99 from I-180/US 220 north to the New York state line.
